\n\n\nAtlanta is popularly\nconsidered the “gay mecca” of the South. For decades, the city has been a site\nof significant LGBTQ+ and trans rights activism, including the Stonewall of the\nSouth (1969) and the ACT UP protest (1996). Alongside advocating for expanded\ncivil rights and protections, Atlanta’s LGBTQ+ community cultivated safe spaces\nwhere people could gather, build community, and experience joy amid ongoing\nstruggles. From the 1970s through the 1990s, the area that would become GSU’s\nDowntown campus was an important site for many of these spaces.\n\n

The Luckie Lane Walking Tour\noffers a snapshot of Atlanta’s LGBTQ+ history, highlighting gay clubs,\nentertainment venues, and nonprofit organizations that served the LGBTQ+\ncommunity. Participants will engage with an interactive digital map featuring\nstudent-produced visual art that reimagines these historic spaces, alongside\narchival photographs of the sites from the Atlanta History Center and GSU’s\nSpecial Collections.

This route from Woodruff Park to the Georgia World Congress center was home to a massive protest in 1978. This protest was against Anita Bryant’s appearance at the Southern Baptist Convention, a singer and openly anti-gay activist. 2,000 people gathered at Woodruff Park, previously known as central city park, and marched up Marietta Street to rally outside of the Georgia World Congress Center for two hours. This rally would lead to the election of the first two openly gay party officers in Georgia, who sat on the executive committee of the Fulton County democratic party.

The Pear Garden’s first iteration opened in 1986 but was not initially a bar; it was a Chinese restaurant, and it quickly became a gathering space for the Black LGBTQ+ community. This bar was known by many names, The Pearl Garden, The Palace, in fact Pear Garden arose later in its lifetime, after the “L” fell off the sign. They sponsored themed nights, drag shows, and even had a LGBTQ+ softball team called the Pear Garden Sluggers, which were the first Black team to play in the Gay World Series! The Pear Garden was forced to close around 1995 during Atlanta’s Olympic preparations. Afterwards, Pear Garden moved to 15 Simpson Street NW. While 15 Simpson Street is only a 10-minute walk north of their first location, this move was short lived. For a third and final time in the late 1990s, the Pear Garden reopened on 91 Broad Street, where it stayed until its closure in the early 2000s.

Secrets was established not long after The Pear Garden, on August 13th, 1987. Secrets hosted themed nights, drag shows, and countless popular local LGBTQ entertainers. However, this bar closed its doors before 1992. Where the stories of this area are often marked by the rapid expansion the Olympic preparation required, Secrets more probably closed for a much more mundane reason, competition. Secrets would not reopen at another location.

This YMCA was known to be friendly to LGBTQ tenants and visitors. Originally built in 1914, the Atlanta YMCA was 2 separate buildings with countless facilities. In the 1960s they added a low-rise connector through the central courtyard. Since at least the 1970s, the LGBTQ+ community of Atlanta knew this place as the only downtown LGBTQ+ safe housing, as well as a safe space for interracial couples. The building was demolished in 1991.

In the late 1980s, Krohngold left a junior PR role to serve as general manager and creative director for Club Rio. Set in a former Columbia Pictures film warehouse, the edgy downtown venue stepped in to fill a void left by closing hotspots like Weekends, 688, and the Limelight. Its unique location quickly drew a diverse crowd of counterculture punks, new wavers, and gay patrons.

Opening night set a star-studded tone when David Bowie arrived following his concert at the Omni, staying until 4 a.m. Over its run, the nightclub attracted high-profile figures, including photographer Bruce Weber, new wave artist Lene Lovich, and actor Timothy Hutton.

However, Club Rio’s most infamous moment occurred during the 1988 Democratic National Convention when Brat Pack actor Rob Lowe visited alongside co-stars Judd Nelson and Ally Sheedy. Lowe left with two women—aged 16 and 22—and returned to his room at the Atlanta Hilton & Towers, where he recorded a tape that the women subsequently took. The resulting scandal generated nationwide publicity.
